Special Event:

The League of Women Voter’s of Tarrant County
invites you to
a Special Event for Women’s History Month

Dr. Rachel Gunter,
  will speak on

“From the Texas Equal Suffrage Association
to the League of Women Voters of Texas”

Saturday, March 26th from 2-3pm

Event will be held at Trinity Terrace,
1600 Texas Street,
Fort Worth, TX 76102

Rachel Michelle Gunter is a professor of History at Collin college in North Texas. She earned a Ph.D. in U.S. history from Texas A&M University in 2017. She studies the woman suffrage movement in Texas and the United States from 1917 to 1923 focusing on how the successes and failures of the movement affected the voting rights of other groups including resident noncitizen voters, Mexican and German immigrants, servicemen, WWI veterans, Mexican Americans, and Black Americans. As part of this research she also looks into changes to the voting system including the beginning or expansion of absentee balloting in much of the United States and how many southern states altered their poll taxes during wartime so as to not disfranchise soldiers or veterans. She further researches the suffragists’ and later the League of Women Voters’ efforts to gain married women’s independent citizenship, instead of the government deriving their citizenship status from their husband’s.

Presentation (in Person) from the Fort Worth Public Library

The First People: The Ancient History and Cultures of Native Americans in North Texas

Presented by: Dr. Reid Ferring, UNT

Our modern city obscures the lives of the first people who occupied this region. Before the arrival of European and American settlers, an ever changing mix of Native American tribes and bands made their homes on the local grasslands and in the forests of the Cross Timbers. In honor of National Native American Heritage Month, Dr. Ferring will explain what archaeology and early records have revealed about the complexity of cultures and history of the predecessors of today’s Native Americans.

The National Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL)

AAUW’s NCCWSL is the premier leadership event for college women in the United States and globally.

NCCWSL was born in 1983, when representatives from national gender equity organizations saw the need for a leadership space dedicated to empowering collegiate women. Since then AAUW has taken the helm of the conference and NCCWSL has transformed into an essential experience for any woman serious about creating meaningful impact on her campus, mobilizing her community, and preparing for personal and professional success after graduation.

In 2018 AAUW Tarrant County Branch assisted one student with transportation costs to NCCWSL.

Student Leader with Tarana Burke, 2018 NCCWSL conference keynote speaker.
